Tupac Amaru: History and Hip-Hop

Perhaps no face in hip-hop is more well-known than late rap icon Tupac Amaru Shakur, but there is an interesting piece of history behind his name that is even lesser known. Tupac was named after the Peruvian revolutionary Tupac Amaru II. This Tupac actually took his name from Tupac Amaru, an Inca chief who was executed in his conflict with the Spanish. Tupac Amaru II would ultimately also suffer the same fate for leading a massive revolt in Peru.
Tupac Amaru’s uprising in Peru would later inspire Tupac Katari to start his own revolt on Bolivia. Thus the name Tupac is one that carries with it a strong sense of rebel and revolution in Latin America. So when Tupac said in “Revolution” that he “was born as a rebel” he was most likely talking about the fact that his family was deeply involved in organizations such as the Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army, but his very name is a symbol of rebellion and resistance against injustice.

The beautiful songstress continues to leave her mark in music history with the rapid response her music has had since her debut back in 2012.  Her first single "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow"  was also a huge success that quickly earned her recognition while crowning her the youngest female singer to reach #1 on Billboard’s Latin Radio Airplay chart at only 17 years of age. “Remaining true to myself” as she has previously expressed, is what generally keeps her humble knowing that her dreams have become a reality with hard work and perseverance.

Written by the rising star herself, “Day 1" was inspired by the rush of emotions the power of love can have over us, and Leslie takes us on a journey of those very feelings with her voice. Her honest and positive lyrics are the reason why her music has so much depth and authenticity.  The purity in her voice, her style of writing and ability to transform her feelings and experiences into songs have paved her way to a very promising career that is sure to endure.

Claiming the #1 position on Billboard various times and already making history in such a competitive industry, Leslie embraces the journey with limitless opportunities. Preparing to conquer a lot more than just the charts, Leslie is only at the beginning of her triumph and has already proven with both her hit singles that she has what it takes to remain and reach the pinnacles that await her. As she continues to write and record for her debut album that is scheduled to be released in May of this year, Leslie keeps busy in other areas of her rapidly growing career. She recently participated at the Premio Lo Nuestro Awards gala where she not only presented an award but was also nominated for “Tropical Female Artist Of The Year”. Adding to the list of achievements, she is also a contender in the nominations for the Billboard Latin Music Awards in the category of "Songs Artist of the Year, Female" which will air on April 25th on the Telemundo Network.
